Breathing exercises for sleep, calm and relaxation
Breathe & Breathing Exercises is a breathing exercise app: five minutes to relieve stress, calm your nervous system or fall asleep faster. A voice guides every inhale and exhale — and everything works offline.
Why breathing exercises work
The advice “just calm down” doesn’t work. The body does: when the exhale is longer than the inhale, the nervous system slows itself down. That’s physiology — and you can learn it with a few minutes of breathing practice a day.

What it’s for
Breathing exercises for your goal
For sleep
Can’t fall asleep, thoughts racing? Breathing for sleep is the gentlest sleep aid: a long exhale, the 4-7-8 rhythm or Yoga Nidra in your headphones. Breathing exercises before bed relax the body and quiet the mind so you fall asleep faster and sleep deeper.
For stress and anxiety
How to calm down fast and relieve stress when it hits? A slow exhale and box breathing lower tension and even out your pulse within a couple of minutes. Gentle breathing techniques for anxiety and stress, nerves before a talk or an exam — always in your pocket.
For relaxation
Breathing to relax the nervous system and muscles after work: an even rhythm, nature sounds, a voice instead of counting. Five minutes of mindful breathing for stress relief in the evening — and the day lets go.
For energy and focus
In the morning — active breathing with holds to wake up without coffee. Before a task — alternate nostril breathing (Anuloma Viloma) that gathers attention and clears the head. Pranayama for beginners with voice cues.
FAQ
Common questions about breathing exercises
Which breathing exercises help you calm down fast?
The simplest ones — where the exhale is longer than the inhale: for example, inhale for 4 counts and exhale for 6–8. Box breathing (4-4-4-4) and slow diaphragmatic breathing work well too. In Breathe & Breathing Exercises these rhythms live in Simple Rhythm and Personal Rhythm, and the voice cues every phase — no counting needed.
What breathing helps you fall asleep?
Techniques with a long exhale: the 4-7-8 rhythm (inhale 4, hold 7, exhale 8) or simply an exhale twice as long as the inhale. If the body is tense, play Yoga Nidra — a guided relaxation lying down that releases tension and helps you drift off.
How should I breathe during a panic attack?
Slowly and through the nose: a short inhale, a long calm exhale, box breathing if you like. The key is not to speed up. The app has a ready calm rhythm and a voice you can simply follow. Breathing exercises help you get through an episode, but they don’t replace medical advice.
Does the app have 4-7-8 breathing and box breathing?
Yes. In Personal Rhythm you set the inhale, holds and exhale in seconds plus the number of cycles — that builds 4-7-8, box breathing 4-4-4-4, a 4-6 rhythm or any pattern of your own. Settings are saved.
What is Anuloma Viloma (alternate nostril breathing)?
A pranayama from yoga: inhale through one nostril, exhale through the other, then switch. It’s considered one of the gentlest breathing techniques for balance and focus. The app shows when to switch nostrils and voices every phase — handy for beginners.
Is Yoga Nidra a sleep meditation?
Yoga Nidra is a deep relaxation lying down, guided by a narrator’s voice: attention travels through the body, breathing slows, the mind settles. People listen to it before bed or during the day instead of a nap. In Breathe & Breathing Exercises it’s fully voiced in English, Russian, German, Japanese and Korean.
Is the app free, and does it work offline?
Simple Rhythm and the music meditations are free; the other practices are unlocked by a subscription with a 3-day free trial. No account needed, everything works offline on iPhone, and every session is saved to Apple Health as Mindful Minutes.
How many minutes a day should I practice?
Three to five minutes of calm breathing once or twice a day is enough — consistency matters more than length. Reminders and statistics in the app help the habit stick. Start intense practices with breath holds (Hyperventilation) gradually, and stop if you feel any discomfort.
